Assistant Director

Scope of the position:
The fulltime assistant director will report directly to the Museum Director, who is the chief administrator of the institution. The assistant director is responsible for conducting the affairs of the museum as assigned by the director: planning, organizing, volunteer training and staffing, working with artifacts in various capacities, writing, supervising operations and program / event activities. Rosemount is a small nonprofit organization and as such requires that everyone, including the assistant director, contribute to the success of its operation by assisting in fundraising, membership drives, other revenue-producing activities, and as needed giving visitor tours, working in the gift shop and staffing rental events on the property.

Education and experience needed:
The assistant director should be a professional with at least three years of experience in the combination of responsibilities presented in the job description. He or she should hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in academic areas either of museum studies, museum management, history, public administration, business management, communications or other demonstrably relevant program.

Skills and physical abilities needed:
The assistant director should have a pleasant manner with the public and the ability to work well with the various museum constituencies: board of directors, staff, volunteers, patrons, museum visitors. He or she should have experience in public speaking and event planning and should have general computer and word-processing capabilities. Must be able to pull, push and lift up to 25 pounds. Experience in grant-application writing and reporting, museum collections, research or graphic design are a plus.

Conditions of employment:
The assistant director is employed by the museum’s board of directors in an at will capacity. The regular workload is 40-50 hours per week, with a typical schedule of Tuesday through Saturday. Additional evening and weekend work is required.

SALARY: $37,000 – $42,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
