The mission of the Lafayette Miners Museum is to showcase the history of Lafayette, Colorado.


The Lafayette Historical Society’s vision is to be a vibrant center that identifies, preserves, protects, and honors Lafayette’s heritage, while inspiring curiosity to shape Lafayette’s future.

Priority Goals

1. Increase membership and visibility in the community.

2. Continue the accreditation process.

3. Re-brand the museum, and improve and expand the facilities, especially collections storage.

Overview of Position


The Museum Director will lead the Lafayette Miners Museum by implementing best practice policies and directing the day-to-day operations of the museum. The Director will be in charge of organizational planning and policymaking, as well as coordinating volunteers, daily activities, and long-term vision. This position is the only paid staff of the Lafayette Historical Society.

30-32 hours/week

Tuesday – Saturday

$23/ hr

Position Responsibilities

Administration & Financial

o Create short- and long-term plans considering all organizational aspects

o Promote museum professional best practices at board and volunteer levels

o Oversee and track all fundraising, membership, and other income efforts

o Seek grant opportunities to further museum operations and offerings

o Implement and write museum policy and procedures

o Interpret and allocate financials within the museum budget in coordination with the BOD

o Direct with knowledge of laws and legislation pertaining to museums

o Attending appropriate continuing education conferences and seminars

o Work on getting the museum up to accreditation standards using AASLH’s StEPs program

Public Relations

o Design and innovate programs and projects to engage the community in Lafayette history

o Act as the face of the Lafayette Miners Museum to the public and community

o Assist visitors with research inquiries

o Work with like-minded institutions on programs, events, and resource databases

o Oversee museum publication endeavors

o Serve as the point of contact for other organizations, such as the City of Lafayette

Collections Management

o Facilitate artifact acquisitions as outlined in the Collections Management Policy

o Oversee the preservation and care of the permanent collection

o Update PastPerfect and PastPerfect Online when interacting with the collection

o Direct museum security efforts and mitigate agents of deterioration

Volunteer Coordination

o Direct and support the volunteer team

o Oversee and coordinate volunteers to assist in museum operations

o Work on recruitment and retention of volunteers


o Implement at least 1 new/revised onsite exhibit annually

o Oversee museum presentation in exhibit and collection storage areas

o Lead tours, field trips, and docent when needed

Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors

Qualifications and Requirements

Education & Experience

o Minimum of BA in history, anthropology, museum studies, art history, or equivalent

o Master’s in museum studies or equivalent experience preferred

o 1-2 years of experience in museum collections management

o Knowledge of legal and ethical considerations of museum management

o Experience with relational databases a must; familiarity with PastPerfect preferred


o Ability to lift 30lbs

o Predominantly computer work, requiring prolonged periods of sitting
