Position: Digitization Assistant

Pay Range: Contract Digitization Assistant, $20/hour, estimated 12 hours per week, Jan-June 2024

History Colorado is hiring a part-time Digitization Assistant. The Digitization Assistant will process two manuscript collections: the Lawrence Brown Collection and the Margaret Tobin Brown Collection. The collections consist of roughly 13 linear feet of papers, newspapers, and photographs. The Digitization Assistant will digitize, catalog, and prepare the collections for a digital transcription project.

The Digitization Assistant will pull boxes, unpack boxes, inventory the materials and scan all items. While digitizing they will catalog the materials in spreadsheets to prepare for data imports. The Digitization Assistant will be responsible for safely handling the materials, naming digital files, auditing scans for quality assurance, describing items appropriately in the catalog records and keeping all the physical materials in their proper order (files/boxes). The Digitization Assistant will create monthly status reports on progress and may be asked to write pieces for social media or blog submission. Work will take place at the History Colorado Center in Denver.

Collections Assistant Duties:
-Safely handle fragile paper, newspapers, and photographic materials
-Inventory the materials while digitizing
-Scan and photograph the collections
-Individually catalog the papers, newspapers, and photographs
-Audit records and ensure accurate data is captured in each record
-Prepare the records for a digital transcribing project

Qualifications:
-Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in museum studies, library science, history, anthropology, or related field
-Demonstrated experience working with digitization projects, including reconciling data
-Must be organized and detail-oriented
-Must be able to work independently
-Ability to climb ladders, carry boxes, crouch, and possibly lift items weighing 25 lbs. or more
-Must be able to work at a computer for long periods of time.
-Must be able to successfully pass a background check
