2019 CWAM Annual Meeting Tour Itineraries

Monumental Tour: West Texas Trail Museum in Moorcroft, Devils Tower National Monument, Hulett Museum
Travel east into Crook County, Wyoming to visit two museums and explore Devils Tower, America’s first national monument. In 1866 the first herds of Longhorn cattle were trailed from Texas to Montana. Our first stop will be The West Texas Trail Museum which is devoted to telling the stories of these hardy times, the men and women who lived them, and the beginning of Moorcroft, Wyoming. We will then drive into the Black Hills to visit the Bear Lodge, or Devils Tower, which was established as a national monument in 1906. We will enjoy the interpretive exhibits and bookstore at the visitor center and have time for a hike around the tower. Our final stop on this tour will be at the Hulett Museum in nearby Hulett, Wyoming to explore their collections focused on the history of northeast Wyoming.

7:00 a.m.: Depart CAM-PLEX or Arbuckle Lodge for Moorcroft
7:30 a.m.: Arrive at West Texas Trail Museum in Moorcroft (light breakfast served)
8:15 a.m.: Depart WTTM for Devils Tower
9:00 a.m.: Arrive at Devils Tower Visitors Center for Welcome, Tour of Interpretive Exhibits
9:30 a.m.: Walk or Bus to Base of Tower for Hike
11:00 a.m.: Depart Devils Tower for Hulett
11:15 a.m.: Arrive at Hulett Museum
12:00 p.m.: Depart for Gillette
1:15 p.m.: Arrive in Gillette

Energy Capital Tour: Eagle Butte Coal Mine and Atlas Carbon
Gillette is known as the Energy Capital of the Nation. This guided tour will take us to Eagle Butte
Mine north of Gillette to explore how coal is mined in the Powder River Basin (PRB) and how it is
loaded on trains and shipped around the nation. Following the mine tour, we will visit one of the PRB’s newest manufacturers, Atlas Carbon. Atlas Carbon produces premium-grade, low-cost
activated carbon products for air and water treatment systems. This new company combines high-quality PRB coals with their patented Pneumatic Flash Calciner (PFC) activation process to produce the most cost-effective activated carbon solutions available today. This tour will depart from the Campbell County Convention and Visitors Bureau located at 1810 South Douglas Hwy. in Gillette.

8:00 a.m.: Depart Visitors Center for Eagle Butte Mine
8:20 a.m.: Arrive at Eagle Butte Mine
10:20 a.m.: Depart Eagle Butte Mine for Atlas Carbon
10:30 a.m.: Arrive at Atlas Carbon
12:30 a.m.: Depart for CCCVB
12:45 a.m.: Arrive CCCVB

Great Plains Tour: Durham Buffalo Ranch, Wright Museum, Drilling Rig Tour
Explore southern Campbell County, Wyoming beginning at the Durham Buffalo Ranch where we will adventure through time and experience one of the world’s largest and oldest working buffalo ranches. With around 3,000 bison currently on 55,000 acres, Durham Ranch has been actively engaged in the raising of bison since the mid-1960s. Our next stop will be to the Wright Centennial Museum in Wright, Wyoming to enjoy the tales of cowboys, colorful characters, coal miners, trailblazers, shepherds, and homesteaders. Our final stop will be to visit an active drilling rig owned and operated by Cyclone Drilling, a Gillette-based oil and gas drilling contractor. We will how Cyclone has been drilling difficult and sometimes record-breaking wells in the Powder River Basin for over 40 years.

7:00 a.m.: Depart from CAM-PLEX for Durham Ranch
7:45 a.m.: Arrive at Durham Ranch for Tour (also time for gift shop)
9:10 a.m.: Depart Ranch for Wright Centennial Museum
9:20 a.m.: Arrive Wright Centennial Museum – Tour for 45 minutes
10:05 a.m.: Depart for Drilling Rig (Location TBD)
10:30 a.m. (approximate time): Arrive at Cyclone Drilling Rig #? for Tour
10:40 a.m.: Safety Briefing, Tour, Questions
12:30 p.m.: Depart for Gillette
1:15 p.m.: Arrive back at CAM-PLEX
